International travel is returning as COVID-19 restrictions across the globe are easing. The total number of guest nights in the United States has bounced back close to normal figures this year. The more intriguing point, though, is that the same trend is visible for European travelers booking stays in U.S. vacation rentals. This year was off to a rough start, with the year-over-year percentage change in January bookings actually being lower than that at the start of the pandemic. Despite this, the number of European guest nights in the U.S. jumped over 400% from January to March, bringing the 2021 vs. 2019 year-over-year figure to 72% in March. These European guests who booked in March likely foresaw the United States opening more in the future months with news of vaccines becoming increasingly available at the time. For the past three months, the year-over-year change fell just below the 0% mark, averaging around 18% less than 2019. With peak summer weeks ahead and the United States travel ban still in place, it will certainly be interesting to see how the trend of European guests booking U.S. vacation rentals continues.
